During the 1960s, Ford built one of the most successful endurance race cars of all time. It all started with the Blue Oval’s attempt to acquire Ferrari, a deal that eventually fell through and drove Hank the Deuce (Henry Ford II) to greenlight the development of a Prancing Horse-slaying race car.

Initially built around a Lola chassis powered by a huge Ford V8, the car that was modified to perfection by engineering masterminds such as Carroll Shelby ended up beating Ferrari at Le Mans on four consecutive occasions, from 1966 to 1969.

The GT40 would remain one of the most beloved American vehicles ever built. And although some examples were converted for road use, it remained an extremely expensive, thoroughbred racer car. Decades later, Ford decided to change that and build a modern, street-legal version that could be enjoyed by a wider audience. It started with the 1995 GT90 concept but the first modern iteration that made it into production was unveiled in the early 2000s. Though it was by no means cheap, the first-generation GT was far more attainable than a genuine GT40 and best of all, it looked much like the 1960s legend.

A little over 4,000 GTs were built between 2004 and 2006. Then, ten years later, the second generation came into being. This time, it was powered by a turbocharged V6 instead of a supercharged V8. Ford’s in-house development gave the world the GT40 Mk I, which turned out to be a disaster, and the 1964 racing season did not win it any laurels. After handing development to Shelby, the Ford GT40 as we know it today began to take shape, although it went through 1965 minus any wins as well. Finally, in 1966 Ford GT40 did what it set out to prove, that a mass carmaker could also build a successful racer. Pricing information for the redesigned 2024 Ford Mustang is now live on Ford’s website.

The cheapest new Mustang is the EcoBoost Fastback, which starts at $32,515 with the mandatory $1,595 destination charge. EcoBoost models use a 2.3-liter turbo-4 engine that generates 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, and are only available with a 10-speed automatic transmission. A standard limited-slip differential helps meter the flow of power to the rear wheels.

A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen are standard as well, along with rear parking sensors, but buyers still only get manually adjusted front seats.

2024 Ford Mustang

Starting at $38,040 with destination, the EcoBoost Premium Fastback grade swaps the individual instrument cluster and touchscreen for a continuous curved-glass display. It also adds a heated steering wheel, remote start, and wireless smartphone charging. This is also the most affordable trim level available as a convertible, with pricing starting at $43,540 for the drop-top.

Those who want V-8 power will have to spend a minimum of $43,090 (including destination) on a Mustang GT Fastback. The 5.0-liter V-8 makes 480 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, and comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission with rev-matching (the 10-speed automatic is optional).

Like the EcoBoost powertrain, the Mustang GT is available available in Premium trim as both a Fastback coupe ($47,610) and convertible ($53,110) with added convenience…

To be fair, I don’t think you can ever call the Ford GT obsolete in terms of how it looks, simply because its design is based on that of the original GT40, which is timeless. But for the sake of argument, if Ford was to build a GT-inspired SUV sometime in the next few years, they would probably need to upgrade the styling a little bit.

Anyway, let’s go back to where it all started for this nameplate, meaning the early 60s. That’s when a man named Ron Bradshaw put pen to paper and created one of the most iconic high-performance race cars the world has ever seen. The styling wasn’t entirely original though, because it was influenced by the Lola Mk6 race car, made by Britain’s Lola Cars.

Once the final design was approved, assembly began in both the UK and the U.S. – however it was in Dearborn, Michigan where the GT40 would finally come into its own, with the Mk II variant ruining Ferrari’s winning streak at Le Mans. It was the first major European win for an American car manufacturer since Duesenberg showed out at the 1921 French Grand Prix.

The Ford GT40 went on to win Le Mans four times (consecutively), to go with multiple other international titles.

Fast forward to the 1995 North American International Auto Show and Ford unveiled the GT90 Concept, followed by a new GT40 Concept seven years later. That’s what we call “toying with an idea”, because in the summer of 2004, production began in Ohio on the first-generation Ford GT.

One of the biggest news of 2020 was SSC Tuatara’s alleged 330-mph top speed run. The news ended amid controversy as many said there were inconsistencies between the automaker’s claims and what actually happened during that run. In the end, SSC had to admit it failed to achieve 330 mph, and, on its next attempt, the Tuatara hit a top speed of 282.9 mph. While the number is nowhere near 330 mph, the Tuatara still broke the Agera RS’ previous 277.9 mph top speed record.


SSC wasn’t happy with that result, and it took the Tuatara back on the track for another attempt. The result was more than satisfying as the supercar got even closer to the 300-mph mark.

Behind the wheel was the same Tuatara customer, Larry Caplin, that broke the record back in 2021. This time around, however, SSC did its homework very well as it invited a lot of people to witness the event. First, they had the Racelogic technician Mitchell Townsend and independent analyst Robert Mitchell, but also SSC North America Founder and CEO Jerod Shelby. The attempt took place at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds at Space Florida’s Launch and Landing Facility on May 14th, 2022. The track is relatively short – 2.3 miles – which means the Tuatara has somewhat limited room to run at full throttle.

Automotive YouTuber Cars with Pilot Tseno recently documented what happens when a Jaguar F-Type S drag races a Ford Mustang on the 1/4 mile.


The Ford Mustang Claims Total Victory Against The Jaguar F-Type S

The F-Type S uses a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 with 400 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque. The Mustang, on the other hand, is a 2017 GT model that packs a 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 with a tune and intake to make 460 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The F-Type S comes equipped with an 8-speed automatic, whereas the Mustang’s automatic transmission is a 10-speed.

Besides the supercharger, it may seem Jaguar’s only advantage is its slightly smaller size and weight of 3,637 lb. This leaves it 110 lbs lighter than the 3,747 lb. Mustang.

With all the specifications in mind, it’s still no surprise the Ford Mustang takes off the line quicker and maintains its lead for the rest of the 1/4 mile. The first race has the Mustang finishing the 1/4 mile in 13.23 seconds at 109.3 mph. The F-Type S completed finished the 1/4 mile in 13.32 seconds at 106.8 mph.
