There have always been certain cars that are much more expensive than others. This could be due to all sorts of different reasons. It could be because they’re incredibly luxurious, packed with all the latest innovations you can get in a car. It could be because they’re incredibly fast and needed some serious performance engineering to make them that way. It could also be because they’re handcrafted, limited-production cars, or ones that are made bespoke or almost bespoke to every single customer.

Every so often, though, a car will come along whose price is so huge that you almost don’t believe that it’s real. These stupendously priced cars can have values that run well into the millions of dollars. This makes them pricey status symbols that only the wealthiest among us can afford. This is especially the case with luxury cars, as they are the most likely to remain hugely expensive as time goes on.

The American, who plans to lodge an entry with the General Motors Cadillac brand to join F1 as soon as possible, has found little support among the current competitors for his ambitions.

While FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is eager to add more teams to the grid and believes GM’s involvement will be a boost to the series, Andretti has not found the support he hoped for among potential rivals.

A combination of factors, including his politicking and criticisms of teams, questions about the true involvement of GM in his engine plans, and concerns over a ‘dilution’ payment to compensate rivals for having to share their commercial rights income, are all understood to be factors that have caused unease.

But, speaking to Forbes, Andretti hit back at the attitude of F1 teams.

He reckons the issue was one of pure “greed”, as he suggested there was no doubt what was the chief motivating factor behind the political battle going on.

“It’s all about money,” Andretti said. “First, they think they are going to get diluted one-tenth of their prize money, but they also get very greedy thinking we will take all the American sponsors as well.

“It’s all about greed and looking at themselves and not looking at what is best for the overall growth of the series.”

McLaren is playing catch-up with its 2023 Formula 1 car because it realised too late that its intended design was badly impacted by the rule change that increased the height of the floor edge by 15mm.

As early as September last year, McLaren realised it was in trouble and had to make drastic changes that ultimately led to its preferred version MCL60 not being ready for the start of the season.

McLaren started this era of enhanced ground-effect aero on the back foot, and its 2022 car the MCL36 evolved a lot with different sidepod and floor tweaks as McLaren tried to catch up.

Its improved aero understanding eventually led to a big Singapore package in September last year, which was designed to move McLaren in a different direction with its bodywork that gave it more development potential long-term.

But while McLaren has faith in its broader aero concept, it has effectively recognised it was behind the curve on one area: the floor edges.

Around the same time as that Singapore package broke cover on the MCL36, McLaren was starting to realise it was stuck down a cul-de-sac with that specific part of its design for 2023.

Late last summer, the FIA pushed through a rule change raising the floor edges by 15mm to combat the porpoising phenomenon that had emerged with the new regulations.

F1’s governing body caused a stir just before Christmas when it announced it was banning all drivers from making any non-neutral “political, religious or personal” statements or comments without prior permission.

In an updated version of the FIA’s International Sporting Code, which governs the running of sanctioned motorsport competitions from the start of 2023, the governing body outlined a new offence.

A new Article 12.2.1.n states that drivers will be deemed to have committed a breach of the rules if they show “the general making and display of political, religious and personal statements or comments notably in violation of the general principle of neutrality promoted by the FIA under its Statutes, unless previously approved in writing by the FIA for International Competitions, or by the relevant ASN for National Competitions within their jurisdiction.”

The new ruling comes in the wake of several drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, making good use of the F1 platform to push on issues that mean a lot to them.

While the FIA’s heavy-handed tactics were criticised for being an unnecessary move, Wolff is open-minded about exactly how draconian things will be.

He also suggests that while the wording of the rule seems quite overbearing, the reality of how matters will be handled by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem could be quite different.

Alex Crosbie leads the New Zealand Formula Ford championship after round one, which attracted national motorsport icon Greg Murphy.

Murphy starred in FFord in the early 1990s, won the New Zealand Grand Prix and then won the Bathurst 1000 four times in a 19-year Australian Supercars career during which he was twice championship runner-up.

In qualifying 2021-22 NZ Formula First runner-up Dylan Grant took pole for his series debut by 0.208 seconds over Blake Dowdall, with reigning champion Crosbie, Zach Blincoe and Greg Murphy also within a second of him around Hampton Downs’s international layout – being used by FFord for the first time.

Grant led away from pole in race one, while Crosbie passed Dowdall for second and Blincoe’s fourth place came under pressure from Blake Knowles on lap two. They went side-by-side into turn two on lap three, with Knowles emerging ahead and Murphy also passing Blincoe.

There was a lead change at the downhill turn eight left-hander hairpin, as Grant turned in late and Crosbie went through.
