McLaren set to make electric SUVs? New boss from Ferrari likely make it happen

The crux of this story started in July 2022 when Michael Leiters joined McLaren as its Chief Executive Officer. He joined the Woking-based supercar manufacturer from Ferrari, where he also led the development of the Prancing Horse’s Purosangue SUV project as its technical chief. Before that, he worked on Porsche’s Cayenne SUV.
Jump to November, in a series of interviews with some major U.K. publications like Evo, Autocar, Car, Auto Express, etc, Michael Leiters has strongly expressed his desire for a new vehicle in McLaren’s line-up, that can fit more than just two passengers. Now, this new model can either be a sedan or an SUV.
But, provided how SUVs have been boosting sales for some supercar manufacturers, coupled with Leiters lineage of developing some iconic performance utility vehicles. It is highly likely that McLaren will soon see its first sports utility vehicle too under this new tutelage.
However, we must not forget that this upcoming model will not be the first utility vehicle from McLaren. The Woking-based company already revealed its all-electric SUV for the Extreme E off-road series. There are obviously some caveats with this e-SUV, with the first being it will not be a production model. Thereby, any assumptions that this extreme SUV previews McLaren’s upcoming production SUV are highly unlikely. Moreover, all Extreme SUVs are based on a common chassis and the body parts are also standard items from the competition.
