Hyundai on Tuesday laid out its fuel-cell strategy for the next two decades, and included in the plans is a sports car being developed in partnership with Rimac.

Hyundai and Rimac first announced plans to jointly develop a sports car in 2019, and now we have the first details on the project. The announcement of the sports car coincided with the purchase of a stake in Rimac by Hyundai Motor Group, a stake that currently stands at about 12%.

The sports car is still at the concept stage, though Hyundai has confirmed several key performance targets. These include an output of more than 670 hp, an ability to hit 60 mph in under 4.0 seconds, and a range of over 300 miles.

The sports car, which in concept form is referred to as the Vision FK, is a plug-in hybrid, where the traditional internal-combustion component is replaced with a hydrogen fuel-cell stack. Mercedes-Benz used a similar setup a few years back for its GLC F-Cell.

In the Vision FK, there’s a battery-electric powertrain developed by Rimac that powers the rear wheels. Up front is a Hyundai fuel-cell stack that converts stored hydrogen into electricity that can either be used to power the electric motors directly or charge the battery so that it can then power the motors.

Hyundai’s latest fuel-cell stack, which the automaker plans to introduce in 2023, will come in 134- and 268-hp versions. According to the automaker, the cost of the system has been lowered by more than 50% compared with today’s technology, and the total package volume reduced by 30%.

Hyundai Motor is ending projects with Rimac Group after the Croatian automaker deepened its ties to Porsche, insiders told automotive media. It remains to be seen what will happen to Hyundai-Kia’s stake in the Rimac Group, especially since the move already affects joint projects.

Hyundai and Kia had invested 80 million euros in Rimac in 2019 and launched a strategic partnership. The cooperation was to bear a battery-electric sports car for Hyundai’s N Performance brand and a sporty fuel cell vehicle.

Hyundai would finish the electric sports car project launched in cooperation with Rimac in-house and also discontinue the joint work on the fuel cell EV, writes Automotive News Europe.

It remains unclear whether the Korean company will sell its stake in Rimac, and Hyundai has not replied to requests for comments.

“We have two active high-level projects ongoing [with Hyundai], one completed and several future projects under discussion,” a Rimac spokeswoman said in an email to Automotive News Europe.

Rimac further denied that Porsche’s increased influence in the company had given Hyundai reason to depart.

Porsche had increased its stake in Rimac from 15.5 to 24 per cent last year. At the same time, Rimac formed a joint venture with Porsche to take over the Bugatti brand from the Volkswagen Group as reported.

“Hyundai has been supportive in the company’s transformation during the last 12 months – including the carve-out of Rimac Technology and joining forces with Bugatti under the new company Bugatti Rimac,” the spokesperson told ANE.

As host Tom Ford explains, it has 1,914 hp with four electric motors and transmissions. The car can travel from 0-62 mph in just under 2 seconds, and it can cover the 1/4-mile in 8.5 seconds. The top speed of 258 mph is also pretty dizzying. It is one of the most advanced cars on the planet right now. Ford is able to take the car for a drive on the ice, and plants the throttle with all the assists off. And the results are spectacular.

A TYCOON who sparked fury when he drove his Bugatti supercar at 259mph on a German motorway has dodged jail over lack of evidence.

Prosecutors closed the investigation after they probed Czech investment chief Radim Passer, 58, over an alleged illegal stunt that was shared online earlier this year.

Prosecutors had investigated whether a prohibited race had taken place in the millionaire’s £2million vehicle on the A2 between Berlin and Hanover.

By law they had to prove whether the driver has moved “recklessly” through traffic in order to reach the “highest possible speed”.

But Passer’s speed was deemed to be less than 2 mph below the sports car’s limited top speed, set at 261 mph because the vehicle’s tyres could burst if it went faster.

The public prosecutor’s office also said the motorway was nearly empty, noting good visibility and weather conditions.

Consequentially, they ruled no one was endangered during the 4.50am stunt.

With insufficient suspicion of a crime, Passer was not charged.

The ruling comes after more than 10 million people viewed the clip of the 33rd-richest Czech hitting 417 kph on the A2 autobahn in July last year.

Passer posted the video online in January and it remains on his YouTube channel today.

It sparked fury among safety campaigners and renewed calls to impose speed limits on Germany’s autobahns – which famously have no restrictions outside urban areas.

Astonished cops found a driver using a wooden stool instead of a driving seat when they pulled him over for a routine check.

As officers approached the car, they were baffled to find the driver sitting on a tiny stool balanced on two pieces of chipboard.

To add insult to injury, the 33-year-old driver didn’t even have a driver’s license.

The bizarre traffic stop took place in the city of Gutersloh in Germany on the morning of May 18.

According to local media, traffic cops pulled over the car while carrying out road checks.

The police said the stool was insecurely placed on two pieces of chipboard and there was no seatbelt or makeshift alternative.

A police spokesperson said the man was unable to give a plausible answer as to why his seat was missing and he was using a wooden stool instead.

As well as the stool and lack of seatbelt, the police also discovered that the man was driving without a license.

The driver, who comes from the town of Harsewinkel, has been temporarily banned from driving on the roads as court proceedings get underway.

Germany is often regarded as having loose driving laws because of the unlimited speeds on many of the country’s motorways, known as Autobahns, but the specifications that allow the vehicles to drive on the roads are tightly controlled.
