DETROIT — The last gas-powered muscle car from Dodge isn’t leaving the road without some squeals, thunder and crazy-fast speed.

The 2023 Challenger SRT Demon 170 will deliver 1,025 horsepower from its 6.2-liter supercharged V-8, and the automaker says it will be the quickest production car made.

Stellantis, formed in 2021 by combining Fiat Chrysler and France’s PSA Peugeot, says it can go from zero to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in a scary 1.66 seconds, making it faster than even electric supercars from Tesla and Lucid.

It’s what the performance brand from Stellantis is calling the last of the rumbling cars that for decades were a fixture of American culture on Saturday night cruises all over the country.

Stellantis will stop making gas versions of the Dodge Challenger and Charger and the Chrylser 300 big sedan by the end of this year, squeezed out by stricter government fuel-economy regulations and an accelerating shift to electric vehicles to fight climate change.

The Canadian factory that makes all three cars will be retooled to make electric versions of larger cars starting next year. Stellantis hasn’t said whether all three models will survive, but it did show off a Charger Daytona SRT electric concept muscle car back in August.

Tim Kuniskis, CEO of the Dodge brand and the unofficial spokesman for America’s gas-powered rubber-burners, said that, while he’ll miss the traditional muscle, he’s excited about making electric performance vehicles.

The chief engineer Rivian poached from McLaren in 2018 has returned to Woking. Charles Sanderson will serve as chief technical officer at McLaren, after previously spearheading software at the British supercar maker. From Automotive News:

“Mr. Sanderson will now spearhead McLaren Automotive’s new technology roadmap and product innovation strategy,” McLaren said. Sanderson’s previous role at McLaren was head of software development.

Rivian said Sanderson had chosen to return to McLaren.

A Rivian spokesperson said Sanderson was part of the product development team reporting to Nick Kalayjian, chief product development officer, who has a strong leadership team and deep bench of talent.

According to his LinkedIn page, Sanderson started with Rivian in June 2018 as vice president of vehicle integration and development, a role he held for 15 months before moving to the chief engineer job in August 2019.

Sanderson’s exit marks the latest in a string of executive departures from Rivian, which has faced challenges in ramping up production of its R1T electric pickup and R1S electric SUV. The startup fell just short of its 25,000-vehicle production target last year, and many analysts found its…

Ford is boosting production of its popular Mustang Mach-E electric SUV and dropping its sticker price weeks after Tesla dropped prices of its vehicles. The move represents a substantial roll-back of price hikes Ford announced last summer on the 2023 models – but buyers may still be paying somewhat more than before the increases.

The Mustang Mach-E, a midsize electric family SUV, was the first serious electric effort for the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker. Priced and aimed squarely at the Tesla Model Y, which has its own starting price of $53,490, the Mach-E is Ford’s bet to get new car buyers to dip their toes into the battery-powered future. it has since been joined in the electric Ford lineup by the workhorse Ford F-150 Lightning. But the company still considers the Mach-E a crucial step for the company’s electric-powered growth.

Late last year, Darren Palmer, Ford’s vice president of electric vehicle programs, told CNN Business that the Mach-E was completely sold out and the automaker was holding off on launching it in more global markets in order to catch up with US demand.

“We could sell it out at least two or three times over,” he said a the time.

We heard a caller share a story about a house fire that reignited the following day after the EVs in the garage started to burn.

We heard firefighters weigh in on the news talking about an EV battery remaining on fire even after being submerged in a dumpster full of water for hours.

Beyond the dangers of the battery fires that require additional water, man hours, and higher risk to our firefighters, there’s the moral question of how the batteries get to the cars in the first place.

There is no shortage of reports across the globe detailing forced labor and child slavery contributing to the mining for critical battery materials.

The Bugatti Chiron Profilée is a one-of-a-kind design, combining the quick acceleration of the Pur Sport and the look of the Chiron or the Chiron Sport. Although the brand only intended to manufacture 500 Chirons of varying models, they created the Chiron Profilée after customers asked for a vehicle that combined speed and style.

“Taking customer wishes to explore a less radical version of the Pur Sport seriously into consideration, we started with the design and development of the Chiron Profilée in Autumn 2020,” said the President of Bugatti Automobiles, Christophe Piochon, said in a statement. Although the 500 Chirons were already sold, “we knew that what we had created was too beautiful to be hidden away. It is – in every sense – a unique piece in Bugatti’s history and a true collector’s item.”

The car’s design features a “sweeping fixed tail,” which allows for more stability and airflow through the engine, according to an official Bugatti press release. Additionally, it is the fastest-accelerating Chiron model, reaching 124 mph in 5.5 seconds.

The Hong Kong government has submitted a plan to the Legislative Council to mandate that all-electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid vehicles must have an acoustic vehicle alert system (AVAS) installed. This follows similar legislation in America, Europe, Japan, China, and the UK.

The authorities believe that electric vehicles are quieter than traditional vehicles while moving, particularly at low speeds, and pedestrians may be unable to hear electric vehicles approaching, which may increase pedestrian accidents.

In 2011, in the early days of electric vehicles, a study by the U.S. Department of Transport showed increased pedestrian accidents involving electric vehicles (EV) compared with internal combustion engined (IC) vehicles, particularly at low speeds. In 2020, a study in Europe found little correlation between vehicle type and pedestrian accidents. Legislation for the fitting of the AVAS system was passed in the EU mainly due to pressure on legislators from The Guide Dogs for the Blind organization and members of other visually impaired groups.

Hong Kong Transport Department figures show pedestrian casualties have declined progressively since 2011, from 3,840 (0.54 percent) to 2,815 (0.38 percent) in 2021. There was a lower blip in 2020 at 2,304 (0.31 percent).

In the Hong Kong government proposal, vehicles fitted with cranes or other lifting devices will also be required to install an AVAS to alert pedestrians of overhead dangers and ensure drivers retract any…

So, let’s try to break down how much it costs to charge an electric vehicle in California.

How we calculated cost

It is difficult to pinpoint one figure that will apply to every EV driver. Even within a single state, there’s variables – such as mileage driven, the type of vehicle and battery, plus the type of charger as well as if the car owner is opting to fuel up at a public station versus installing a personal home charging point.

But the general formula for calculating how much charging an electric car will cost is pretty simple: divide your car’s maximum range by its range per kWh, then multiply it by the average cost of electricity per kWh.

That figure, range per kWh, is an estimate that can vary greatly depending on vehicle and also driving factors. More intense driving, say, uphill in the wind, would lower your overall range per kWh since the car needs more power.
