I started watching Formula 1 about two decades ago. Even though I was 9 years old, I vividly remember the first race I saw. It was the season-opener at Melbourne and although David Coulthard crossed the finish line first in his McLaren-Mercedes, I ended up rooting for Michael Schumacher. That’s partially because I had about ten posters with Ferrari supercars on my bedroom wall and partially thanks to the local TV pundit’s reporting about Schumacher’s struggles to bring Ferrari back to the top.

I watched every single race that season, enjoying the epic battle between my favorite driver and the talented Jacques Villeneuve, who managed to clinch the driver’s title. The following season was also a thrill to watch, as Mika Häkkinen beat Schumacher for the title. Although Ferrari’s struggles continued, I kept rooting for them and, in 2000, the German finally won it all behind the wheel of a Prancing Horse.

What followed next is remembered by every Formula 1 fan. Schumacher and Ferrari would dominate Formula 1 for the next four seasons and although I was a fan, the lack of competition turned me away from the sport as it became boring. I started watching more races again in 2006 and for about five years, the series became exciting again.

However, in recent years, Formula 1 has become boring once again and in this article, I’ll explore five reasons why I’d rather watch a bad reality show or paint a fence and watch it dry.

Whenever you see a shiny red Ferrari F40 at auction, you can expect two things. First, it will likely be worth at least seven figures and second, a low-mileage example would see its value reach ridiculous proportions. Yes, this goes for almost any other iconic vintage automobile, but it’s even more prevalent with F40s in particular. There’s a handful of good reasons for that: it came with close to 500 horsepower, it was the last model approved by Enzo Ferrari, and it was the first production car to break past 200 mph.

As if those accolades weren’t enough, it also showcased a legendary Pininfarina-penned design, ubiquitous in posters plastered throughout many teenagers’ rooms in the ’90s. Despite being on most, if not every auto enthusiast’s “dream car” list, the Ferrari F40 is known for other less flattering characteristics as well. Certain units are infamously known for turning up the heat to the point of catching on fire, leading to some badly charred F40 examples on the road in the past.

Having a 2.9-liter V8 engine paired with two massive turbo, its power plant doesn’t alleviate its tendency to overheat either. As everyone knows, it’s called the Purosangue, and guns for the likes of the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga Speed, and Aston Martin DBX707. The Purosangue represents Ferrari’s first venture into the world of super SUVs (it’s actually a crossover though), and they may be a little late to the high-riding fiesta, but they should cash in big time.

You see, Lamborghini more than doubled their sales with the Urus, so Ferrari has high expectations from the Purosangue. It targets their usual clientele, as well as new customers, for whom having extra seats at the back, four doors, and a generous ground clearance means more than tackling corners fast in a mid-engine supercar. But then again, with an MSRP of nearly $400,000 stateside, anyone who can afford it probably calls the Roma pocket change.

Unveiled half a year ago, and with production set to commence at Maranello, the Purosangue was designed by Ferrari’s Styling Center, under the close watch of Flavio Manzoni, who has overseen the development of other Prancing Horses, including the LaFerrari. Described as a machine “unlike any other,” it uses a naturally aspirated V12, with a 6.5-liter displacement. The engine peaks at 716 Nm (528 lb-ft), and it develops 725 ps (715 hp/533 kW). The Italian company claims that it will do over 310 kph (193 mph) and that the 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) acceleration takes only 3.3 seconds, or three tenths faster than the mighty Enzo.

Say hello to the all-new Purosangue (poore-oh-sang-way). A tongue twister of a name, it means “thoroughbred” in Italian. True to its pedigree, Ferrari has kept the fundamentals of this hallowed brand intact, despite breaking a few traditions. It’s the first four door Ferrari in history and comes with an SUV-like ground clearance.

The Purosangue is comfortable, spacious and high enough above the ground to suit India’s inconsistent roads.

But calling the Purosangue an SUV is blasphemous (for Ferrari). It’s a radical departure from the SUV template followed by Lamborghini, Porsche and Aston Martin and is more of a high-riding coupe.

Ferrari may have stepped out of its comfort zone by jacking up the ride height and adding an extra pair of doors, but this has unwittingly made the Purosangue the perfect Ferrari for India. Let’s start with the 185mm ground clearance which makes it an everywhere car, not just one for curated drives on hard-to-find smooth roads.

What’s unique are the Purosangue’s rear-hinged doors, which open wide. (Remember your granddad’s Fiat?) This makes getting in and out easy for rear passengers who don’t have to stretch out to shut the door. That job is done with the press of a button.

That’s because most vintage cars were built in very limited numbers and many of them were crashed, scrapped, or used as a base for other racing projects. And many of those that survived hard years of racing lost many of their original components, especially engines, gearboxes, and all sorts of internals that tended to break at the track.

The Ford GT40 is one of those cars. While not as rare as some 1950s racers that saw daylight in fewer than 10 units a piece, the Le Mans-winning legend is one of the rarest classics bearing the “Ford” logo today. The company made 105 of them from 1964 to 1969, but that number is much smaller now. On top of that, Ford built about a half-dozen iterations that are notably different in terms of aerodynamics and underpinnings.

But because it was so successful at beating Ferrari and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four years in a row, the GT40 is also one of the most replicated race cars out there. What’s more, Superformance is making a continuation series that was approved by Carroll Shelby himself. And needless to say, it looks runs like the real deal.

But the California-based shop, which also produces Shelby Cobra, Shelby Daytona, and Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport replicas, is also taking it up a notch on certain cars. Over the past few years I’ve been lucky enough to drive a large majority of the new cars on sale, from hot hatchbacks and family SUVs to ultraluxury sedans and supercars. I love getting to experience the amazing variety in the automotive industry, especially as the world is reaching a tipping point in terms of electrification. Recently, while spending a week with the 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE, I solidified my thoughts on something that’s been brewing in my brain for a while: I don’t want to drive gas-powered cars anymore. In nearly every new car internal-combustion car I’ve driven over the past couple years, I’ve come away thinking, “damn, that would just be better as an EV.”

The outgoing Mercedes-AMG E63, the EQE’s closest ICE equivalent, was a hilarious car. It was rowdy and fun to drive while still being an excellent luxury car with all the best modern tech features. Obviously I love AMG’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, one of the most giggle-inducing engines on the market. I’ll be sad when the AMG V8 dies — it’s true that EVs can’t match the visceral drama of a loud, powerful engine. But for all the old-school character you lose when the gas engine goes away, Mercedes has introduced plenty of new, interesting drama with its AMG-specific EV powertrain.

Of course the AMG EQE has mega straight-line performance; that’s a given for an EV. Its 677 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque result in a 0-to-60-mph time of 3.2 seconds, on the quicker…

When you think of a Ferrari, what immediately comes to mind? Is it the Prancing Horse emblem, a flash or scarlet, or the roar of a combustion engine? Well, while the brand’s personal palette and Cavallino Rampante aren’t going anywhere, the electric revolution could be set to change the signature sound of a Ferrari.

The Italian marque is set to launch its first electric supercar in 2025. After dabbling with electrification on the SF90, the next release will go all in on electrification. That means it won’t have the roar of a V12, or even the rumble of a turbocharged V6 hybrid. Instead, it’ll sound like every other electric car, which is to say not very exciting.

But, according to a report from Bloomberg, Ferrari has a very Ferrari solution to this.

Instead of composing a synthetic engine note akin to the one we heard when Dodge unveiled its idea of an electric muscle car, Ferrari is taking a different tack. The Italian company will, instead, amplify the sounds made by the electric motors that power the car. Bloomberg reports:

Bugatti Rimac is still a young company. It formed just 13 months ago when Porsche agreed to give Rimac a stake in the storied hypercar maker in exchange for a stake in Rimac business. Now a little over a year after the merger, the company has big plans. And in some cases, as Auto Express (via MotorAuthority) reports, that partnership has involved some things getting shot down.

Speaking to Auto Express, Bugatti Rimac’s CEO (and Rimac founder) Mate Rimac talked about how he wants the company to do amazing stuff. Like the successor to the Chiron which Rimac calls “bonkers.” While Rimac said that his company started developing a new engine not long after talks of his company taking control of Bugatti began, the Chiron successor will be special; a new hybrid hypercar.

“It will be hypercar rearranged as a hybrid. It’s completely new, so there is not one part carried over from any car; nothing carried over from Chiron, nothing carried over from Nevera. Everything is from scratch,” he said to Auto Express.

Rimac also asked about developing larger cars, something that can fit more than two people. While he didn’t rule it out, he did speak to something with the performance of a hypercar while having four seats being difficult to make.

DR: You’re a Formula 1 engineer, yet RB17 is aimed at a non-racer niche. Is there a personal connection?

AN: I’ve sketched road cars since I was at university. My first and foremost passion is racing, but I’ve always had an interest in road cars which morphed into the [2010] PlayStation X1. From there we entered into a partnership with Aston Martin to develop Valkyrie, which was designed first and foremost as a road car.

It was a very fruitful partnership, but – by definition – we had to agree on common ground. [RB17] is conceived purely as a Red Bull car where we are clearly our own masters, and it’s conceived first and foremost as a track car.

To follow on from Valkyrie and be involved in something which is the next step, but as a two-seat [track] car is really exciting. I love the conception of the car and trying to get the overall package together. It’s a similar challenge yet a very different challenge to [designing] a single seat Formula 1…
