Yakima Coroner on Leave as Prosecutor Considers Charge

Yakima County Coroner Jim Curtice is on leave as the Yakima County Prosecutor decides whether to charge Curtis with assaulting a Yakima County Sheriff’s Deputy. The incident reportedly happened on March 10 at his home in Gleed. Brusic wouldn’t give KIT News a lot of detail about the incident other than to say he continues to consider charges. Curtis is unavailable for comment on the matter.

CURTICE WAS SUFFERING A MENTAL CRISIS AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT

Media reports and a Facebook post from Jim Curtice say the incident was the result of Curtice struggling with his mental health. Because he’s served in emergency health since a young man his family says he struggles with PTSD and was having a mental challenge as deputies were trying to help him.  He was reportedly hospitalized after the incident and is seeking ongoing treatment. The deputy was not injured during the call. Curtice was not ordered but rather made his own decision to take a leave of absence.

Rivian’s chief engineer has gone back to building British supercars, GM’s CEO is making a case for robotaxis in Washington, and things are getting desperate for Volkswagen in China. All that and more in this edition of The Morning Shift for Friday, March 17, 2023.

1st Gear: Back to Mac

The chief engineer Rivian poached from McLaren in 2018 has returned to Woking. Charles Sanderson will serve as chief technical officer at McLaren, after previously spearheading software at the British supercar maker. From Automotive News:

“Mr. Sanderson will now spearhead McLaren Automotive’s new technology roadmap and product innovation strategy,” McLaren said. Sanderson’s previous role at McLaren was head of software development.

Rivian said Sanderson had chosen to return to McLaren.

A Rivian spokesperson said Sanderson was part of the product development team reporting to Nick Kalayjian, chief product development officer, who has a strong leadership team and deep bench of talent.

According to his LinkedIn page, Sanderson started with Rivian in June 2018 as vice president of vehicle integration and development, a role he held for 15 months before moving to the chief engineer job in August 2019.

Sanderson’s exit marks the latest in a string of executive departures from Rivian, which has faced challenges in ramping up production of its R1T electric pickup and R1S electric SUV. The startup fell just short of its 25,000-vehicle production target last year, and many analysts found its…

When you think of a Ferrari, what immediately comes to mind? Is it the Prancing Horse emblem, a flash or scarlet, or the roar of a combustion engine? Well, while the brand’s personal palette and Cavallino Rampante aren’t going anywhere, the electric revolution could be set to change the signature sound of a Ferrari.

The Italian marque is set to launch its first electric supercar in 2025. After dabbling with electrification on the SF90, the next release will go all in on electrification. That means it won’t have the roar of a V12, or even the rumble of a turbocharged V6 hybrid. Instead, it’ll sound like every other electric car, which is to say not very exciting.

But, according to a report from Bloomberg, Ferrari has a very Ferrari solution to this.

Instead of composing a synthetic engine note akin to the one we heard when Dodge unveiled its idea of an electric muscle car, Ferrari is taking a different tack. The Italian company will, instead, amplify the sounds made by the electric motors that power the car. Bloomberg reports:

There are a lot fewer crypto bros and NFT nerds in Davos, Switzerland, for this week’s World Economic Forum, but one eye-catching visual reminder of the teetering crypto currency market remains: A bright orange Mercedes-AMG GT with a Bitcoin badge replacing the Mercedes three pointed star on the front.

Cryptocurrency had a hell of a 2022; the industry lost $1.4 trillion, according to CNBC. The crash cleared a former crypto storefronts in Davos, Switzerland, during this week’s 2023 World Economic Forum:

The Promenade is the main street in Davos where companies and governments take over shops and cafes for the week. Last year, crypto firms from all walks of life took over the place. But since the market slide, there are far fewer crypto firms with flashy store fronts at Davos.

One shop selling non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, has disappeared. Prices of NFTs, which are digital collectibles, also plunged last year. What’s left are companies that survived the bear market and that are looking to expand their businesses.

Mark Haefele, chief investment officer at UBS Global Wealth Management, was asked during an event hosted by the Swiss bank what he would like to see in Davos this year. He said he had seen it already: “It’s less crypto on the main street.”

Bugatti Rimac is still a young company. It formed just 13 months ago when Porsche agreed to give Rimac a stake in the storied hypercar maker in exchange for a stake in Rimac business. Now a little over a year after the merger, the company has big plans. And in some cases, as Auto Express (via MotorAuthority) reports, that partnership has involved some things getting shot down.

Speaking to Auto Express, Bugatti Rimac’s CEO (and Rimac founder) Mate Rimac talked about how he wants the company to do amazing stuff. Like the successor to the Chiron which Rimac calls “bonkers.” While Rimac said that his company started developing a new engine not long after talks of his company taking control of Bugatti began, the Chiron successor will be special; a new hybrid hypercar.

“It will be hypercar rearranged as a hybrid. It’s completely new, so there is not one part carried over from any car; nothing carried over from Chiron, nothing carried over from Nevera. Everything is from scratch,” he said to Auto Express.

Rimac also asked about developing larger cars, something that can fit more than two people. While he didn’t rule it out, he did speak to something with the performance of a hypercar while having four seats being difficult to make.

1st Gear: Tesla Trucks Might Finally be Coming

After years of will they, won’t they, Tesla finally started building its Semi trucks in the U.S. earlier this month. The automaker confirmed that production of the all-electric truck with a glitzy handover ceremony that saw it ship off the first Semi to Pepsi Co. And now, the drinks maker says it’s gearing up to send the trucks out onto the road.

According to Reuters, Pepsi plans to begin rolling out its fleet of 100 Tesla Semi trucks in the new year. In 2023, the electric trucks will begin completing deliveries for Pepsi Co. customers across the U.S., including for customers like Walmart and Kroger. Reuters reports:

PepsiCo Inc, which ordered the big trucks in 2017, is purchasing them “outright” and is also upgrading its plants, including installing four 750-kilowatt Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) charging stalls at both its Modesto and Sacramento locations in California, PepsiCo Vice President Mike O’Connell said in an interview. A $15.4 million state grant and $40,000 federal subsidy per vehicle helps offset part of the costs.

But while your Kindle helps you fall asleep each night, McLaren Racing is instead leveraging the unique display technology to help revolutionize corporate sponsorships.

Racing is a big business, especially at the Formula 1 level where a team can spend over a hundred million dollars in a single season. Corporate sponsorships help offset those costs, and enable other companies to benefit from a Formula 1 teams’ efforts. Putting a corporate sponsor’s logo on a Formula 1 race car isn’t just a way to say thanks, it’s valuable publicity for the company, so much so that after a race it’s someone’s job to calculate just how much screen time a given sponsor’s corporate logo had. Sponsors compete for placement on the limited space a Formula 1 car offers, but that could soon change.

McLaren Racing recently announced a partnership with a company called Seamless Digital to upgrade its 2022 MCL36 cars with electronic paper screens. It’s an idea we’ve seen before. At CES 2022, earlier this year, BMW demo’d an SUV that was completely wrapped in flexible electronic paper from E Ink, allowing the vehicle to dynamically changes its appearance from white to black, or introduce different patterns and designs, without a trip to the paint shop.

Supercars are going through a bit of a boom period in Japan as the wealthy emerge from pandemic lockdowns to a weaker yen and a competitive used-car market. Ferraris and Lamborghinis are highly sought after in the country not only as marvels of engineering but as lucrative investments, too, according to Bloomberg.

But pandemic restrictions lifting and the scarcity of new cars due to supply chain issues aren’t the only things driving the sales boom of supercars: the EV transition is also partially to blame for the recent spike in supercar sales. Well-heeled buyers in Japan are wary of the imminent switch from ICE-powered cars to EVs, and wealthy collectors are scrambling to buy supercars from Ferrari and Lamborghini. From Bloomberg:

After more than two years of Covid-related restrictions, drivers are spending money on new cars, while the global shift toward electric vehicles is sparking interest in supercars and the growl of their engines, according to Yasuhiro Suyama, president of the Japan Supercar Association.

“If you don’t drive them now, then when?” Suyama said.

That mentality is reflected in the number of new registrations for cars priced over a certain threshold, which analysts in Japan associate with the sale of supercars. Electric car manufacturer Rivian is voluntarily recalling 12,212 vehicles over concerns of a possible loose fastener, or nut, that could cause serious problems like excessive wheel tilt, and in rare cases, wheel separation that could lead to major loss of steering control.

In a letter to customers on Friday, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe told them the company planned to recall cars over this issue, which it became aware of on Sept. 28. While Scaringe explained that the problem only affected “a small percentage of vehicles,” and that the company had so far only seen seven reports “potentially related” to the loose fastener, it was issuing the recall out of an abundance of caution.

A Rivian spokesperson on Saturday told Gizmodo that the company will make any necessary adjustments to customers with affected vehicles free of charge at its service centers. To date, Rivian is not aware of any injuries that have resulted from this issue.

“We will begin immediately contacting affected customers to schedule appointments for inspections and repairs if needed,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “The repair takes a few minutes to complete, and with customer collaboration, we have built out the capacity to complete the needed action in as little as 30 days.”
