Just recently, we finally found out how the OEM pony and muscle car world will look like in the coming years after General Motors also came out of the closet about the fate of the iconic Chevy Camaro.

We have known since last year that Stellantis has taken a harsh decision about the Dodge Charger and Challenger – their 2023 model years will be the final ones with ICE powertrains. To celebrate the end of the gasoline age, the company gave both nameplates the honor of no less than seven ‘Last Call’ special editions. Of which, the last one, aka the Challenger SRT Demon 170, is not just a last hurrah for the ICE era but also an eight-second-quarter mile (prepped dragstrip) slap in the face of EVs like the Tesla Model S Plaid.

Going forward, there will be no less than nine levels of Banshee EV power for the production version of the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept – and we can easily read between the lines to imagine that battery power is also next in line for the Chevy Camaro. General Motors is keeping mum on the EV ideas, for now, but they did announce that in January 2024 they will make the last of the sixth-generation ‘Maros and also teased the arrival of a Collector’s Edition with a Panther-related name to celebrate the end of the lineage. Meanwhile, the 2024 Ford Mustang soldiers on with EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse ethos of the ICE variety.

So, are we surprised that everyone might turn their ICE eyes on the legendary ‘Stang to fulfill their…

To be fair, I don’t think you can ever call the Ford GT obsolete in terms of how it looks, simply because its design is based on that of the original GT40, which is timeless. But for the sake of argument, if Ford was to build a GT-inspired SUV sometime in the next few years, they would probably need to upgrade the styling a little bit.

Anyway, let’s go back to where it all started for this nameplate, meaning the early 60s. That’s when a man named Ron Bradshaw put pen to paper and created one of the most iconic high-performance race cars the world has ever seen. The styling wasn’t entirely original though, because it was influenced by the Lola Mk6 race car, made by Britain’s Lola Cars.

Once the final design was approved, assembly began in both the UK and the U.S. – however it was in Dearborn, Michigan where the GT40 would finally come into its own, with the Mk II variant ruining Ferrari’s winning streak at Le Mans. It was the first major European win for an American car manufacturer since Duesenberg showed out at the 1921 French Grand Prix.

The Ford GT40 went on to win Le Mans four times (consecutively), to go with multiple other international titles.

Fast forward to the 1995 North American International Auto Show and Ford unveiled the GT90 Concept, followed by a new GT40 Concept seven years later. That’s what we call “toying with an idea”, because in the summer of 2004, production began in Ohio on the first-generation Ford GT.

That would be the combination of the fabled American muscle car DNA with a mid-engine setup to create a proper U.S. supercar that would not use quirky V10 bits and pieces like the Dodge Viper but rather have the same style, ethos, and nimble performance as European counterparts. Yep, that is the same recipe that Chevy used later when creating the more affordable C8 Corvette, of course! And it’s a great one, right?

After all, Chevy enthusiasts would rather save up a pretty penny and buy the C8 Stingray or Z06 rather than spend their hard-earned cash on the ailing sixth-gen Camaro, it seems. Ford, on the other hand, is almost running out of GT ideas, unfortunately. So, after the initial 2005 to 2006 generation, they skipped a beat to the tune of around a decade before the arrival of the 2017 through 2022 model year, second-generation Ford GT.

Sure, they did not refrain from pulling out all the stops during that time, both in terms of updates as well as special editions (Competition Series, lots of Heritage editions, the LM) or racing versions. The latter, aka the Ford GT LM Edition (as in Le Mans) and the GT Mk IV, are not only tributes to certain Le Mans victories (the 2016 race for the LM and the 1967 edition for the Mk IV, respectively), but also fitting ways to end both the series-production and track-exclusive lineage.

Alas, some people do not want that, and sometimes also take matters into their hands. Or, rather, at the tip of their CGI brushes, as is the case…

As everyone knows, it’s called the Purosangue, and guns for the likes of the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga Speed, and Aston Martin DBX707. The Purosangue represents Ferrari’s first venture into the world of super SUVs (it’s actually a crossover though), and they may be a little late to the high-riding fiesta, but they should cash in big time.

You see, Lamborghini more than doubled their sales with the Urus, so Ferrari has high expectations from the Purosangue. It targets their usual clientele, as well as new customers, for whom having extra seats at the back, four doors, and a generous ground clearance means more than tackling corners fast in a mid-engine supercar. But then again, with an MSRP of nearly $400,000 stateside, anyone who can afford it probably calls the Roma pocket change.

Unveiled half a year ago, and with production set to commence at Maranello, the Purosangue was designed by Ferrari’s Styling Center, under the close watch of Flavio Manzoni, who has overseen the development of other Prancing Horses, including the LaFerrari. Described as a machine “unlike any other,” it uses a naturally aspirated V12, with a 6.5-liter displacement. The engine peaks at 716 Nm (528 lb-ft), and it develops 725 ps (715 hp/533 kW). The Italian company claims that it will do over 310 kph (193 mph) and that the 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) acceleration takes only 3.3 seconds, or three tenths faster than the mighty Enzo.
