De Tomaso is a company that specialized in building Italian sports cars powered by American V8s, like the Mangusta (4.7-liter Ford V8) and the Pantera (351 Cleveland Ford V8) that for some time even owned Maserati, after buying it from Citroën because the Italian brand kept losing them money.
The 1900s and 2000s marked the end days of the brand, and it filed for bankruptcy in 2012, which was eight years after the death of the founder Alejandro De Tomaso, and after a fraudulent attempt of reviving it. In about two years after, Norman Choi bought the naming rights of the company and started planning its return. Then, five years later, the brand was back on track with a new, almost retro-futuristic looking supercar, the P72.
The De Tomaso P72 Is A Tribute To ’60s Sports Cars
July 4th 2019, the date of the global release of the De Tomaso P72, known previously as “Project P”, would mark the return of the Italo-Argentinian brand, now headquartered in New York. The P72 is a jaw-dropping, gorgeous supercar that’s powered by a supercharged 5.0-liter Ford Coyote V8 (which also powers the Mustang GT) and it’s mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The car’s design is mostly inspired in the De Tomaso P70, also known as Sport 5000, a V8-powered racing roadster born as a collaboration between De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby, which was supposed to race in the United States Road Racing…
