BMW’s remarkable M division celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. The car that started it all was the BMW M1. It is one of the few cars ever to be developed as a race car before becoming a road car for pure homologation reasons. The M1 though is a sports car that burnt through BMW’s cash, at an alarming rate. It is also a car that caused multiple contract rescission, bankruptcy, and receivership. And as Jason Cammisa from Hagerty tells us, a BMW midnight raid to steal car’s from a Lamborghini warehouse. All to create a car that never raced as intended.
We are though required by international law to point out that BMW was the rightful owner, and stole nothing but merely reclaimed its own property.
What Exactly Went Wrong For The BMW & Lamborghini Partnership
BMW chose Lamborghini for the project so they could do the design work, while BMW’s M division sold the car. That was until the funding went awry. The funds in which Lamborghini misappropriated were for both the M1, and for an Italian military vehicle for the US government. Lamborghini was also sued for plagiarism, with the copied work Lamborghini used becoming the Humvee. The redone Lamborghini became the somewhat ridiculous LM002. Back to the M1 though, and BMW terminated its contract with Lamborghini as they could not fulfill it anymore.
As Lamborghini was out of money, suppliers would not work with the company. As such, BMW terminated…
