If you just look at the stats for each car, a Tesla Model S Plaid should easily walk away from a Ford Mustang GT in a drag race. But there are dozens of videos online showing drag races between these two cars, and the outcome is not always the same. Sometimes the Ford Mustang GT wins.
That can happen because there are many factors besides horsepower, torque, and curb weight that can influence the outcome of a drag race. For instance, driver skills can greatly affect how a car performs.
With that in mind, Drag Racing and Car Stuff has a video on their YouTube Channel in which two different Tesla Model S Plaids drag race against three different Ford Mustang GTs. The results of these races show how different drivers in different examples of the same car can have different results in a drag race.
First 2 Races Against Sixth-Generation Mustang GT
The Tesla Model S Plaid’s first opponent is a sixth-generation Ford Mustang GT. With 1,050 lb-ft of torque going to all four wheels, the Tesla should be able to get off the line quicker. But that is not the case here.
The Mustang GT leaps off the line like a cheetah and takes a lead that it maintains all throughout the 1/4-mile race. Ford’s pony car crosses the finish line in 9.30 seconds while traveling at 135 mph. Coming in second is the Tesla at 9.44 seconds with a speed of 140.68 mph.
